Newly advanced robotic surgery has provided an innovative approach in the treatment of cancer. Providing with a 3-dimensional view, robot-assisted console helps the surgeon to operate in closed, narrow spaces where it may be difficult to perform laparoscopic surgery. It also provides ease in surgical suturing which helps in reconstruction. With the launch of this OPD, local residents will benefit in terms of reduced travel for primary consultations and expert opinion due to the availability of specialist doctors in Srinagar.”
Patients with cancer generally have a poorer prognosis because of many factors such as late diagnosis, low awareness, and the lack of access to healthcare. With early diagnosis and detection of cancer, patients have the best chance for successful treatment. Cancer treatment options have improved considerably over the past few years, leading to an improved treatment outcome.
“The eventual goal is to improve cure rates, survival and minimise usage of costly or ineffective treatment. While earlier, patients required chemotherapy, but with the advent of precision oncology, there is a paradigm shift in the treatment modality of the disease. Addressed through targeted therapy, this modality is more effective, and have lesser side effects than chemotherapy. We have the capacity to perform lab tests for precision medicines, we have experienced molecular oncologist and clinicians who can offer their expertise to patients,” said Dr Waseem Abbas, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi
Recent data shows that developing countries are facing a sharp increase in cancer incidence. Some early indications of cancer can be fatigue, lump or a thick area under the skin, weight gain or change in bladder and bowel movements. Preventive health checks with routine screenings like mammograms, self and clinical breast examinations with regular PSA test (for prostate cancer in male) is important in order to detect cancer early on.
“Recent advances in understanding cancer have helped us develop better strategies and treatment plan for cancer patients. Radiation therapy is a boon for cancer patients even at later stages which may be used in combination with surgery and chemotherapy. While radiation therapy is effectively used in the treatment of cancer and eases its symptoms, the high doses of radiation also prevent its recurrence by delaying its further growth. This therapy makes use of image guidance technique for precisely targeting the tumor site with an accuracy of less than 1 mm error. The advanced radiation therapy also ensures the surrounding healthy cells and organs from damage.” Said Dr Rajender Kumar, Director, Radiation Oncology, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi.
Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi firmly believes that the masses need to be aware about the symptoms and ensure regular check-ups for early detection. Delayed diagnosis leads to prolonged treatment which leads to increase in cost and poorer outcomes.
