Early Detection Saves Lives: Essential Cancer Screening Tests for Women

Gynaecological cancers, including cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers, pose a serious health risk to women. However, early detection through regular screenings significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival. Many gynaecological cancers show no symptoms in the early stages, making timely screenings essential for every woman’s health.

Why Early Screening Matters

Most gynaecological cancers develop gradually, and symptoms often appear when the disease has advanced. Regular screenings help detect abnormalities before they turn into cancer, allowing for early intervention. Women who undergo routine tests are more likely to receive less invasive treatments and have better survival rates.

Essential Gynaecological Cancer Screenings

Women should prioritise regular check-ups and screenings, especially if they have a family history of cancer or other risk factors.

1. Pap Smear and HPV Test For Cervical Cancer

Women aged 21-65 should undergo a Pap test every 3 or 5 years with an HPV test. These test can help detect pre-cancerous stages and HPV infections which causes cervical cancer.

2. Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS) and CA-125 Test For Ovarian Cancer

These tests are suitable for women who are at higher risk of having ovarian cancer or those experiencing symptoms like regular bloating and pelvic pain. These tests help in detecting ovarian cysts, tumours or any abnormal growth in the early stages.

3. Endometrial Biopsy For Uterine Cancer

This is recommended for women over 40 years of age with irregular bleeding or those at high risk due to obesity, diabetes, or hormone therapy. This test is useful for identifing abnormal cell growth in the uterus before it turns cancerous.

4. HPV Vaccination

Every woman between the age of 9 to 45 years, ideally 9-14 years (before the exposure of HPV). Vaccination reduces the risk of HPV-related cancers.

5. Mammography For Breast Cancer Screening

Mammography is recommended for women over 40 years every 1-2 years. It helps to detect breast cancer in early stage, when treatment is most effective.
